State Senate did the right thing on illegal immigration
I want to congratulate the state senators who passed legislation to crack down on illegal immigration, especially those who have been fighting for these common sense changes for years. Thank you also every one who let their state senators know that these were important changes that had to be made. Now let's encourage them to fight to get the changes through the conference committee.

A letter you sent me Charlie.
ReplyDeleteDear Mark,
Thank you for taking the time to write to me.
The nation’s immigration rules and processes are a mess, but two wrongs do not make a right. Building workarounds and semi-solutions that bend the rules at the state level sends the wrong message to those who play by the rules and provides the federal government a license to continue its unacceptable delay in developing a rational and understandable immigration policy.
Public assistance should not be made available to illegal immigrants. It makes no sense to provide public support to people who are here in Massachusetts illegally while others—the actual citizens of the Commonwealth—remain on long waiting lists to receive state assistance.
It makes no sense to grant in-state tuition discounts to state colleges and universities those who reside in Massachusetts illegally. These residents cannot work in Massachusetts legally if or when they graduate, which is the primary purpose behind in-state tuition discounts. Furthermore, the amount of funding that benefits tuition rates is not unlimited. If this funding goes to illegal immigrants, it cannot go to Massachusetts students who are in this country legally.
Finally, public or private higher education institutions can give privately-funded scholarships to illegal immigrants if they wish. This should remain a private decision, and taxpayers should bear the responsibility of subsidizing these benefits.
Issuing driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants has serious implications. In the United States, driver’s licenses serve as a universal form of identification. I do not support issuing a state-sanctioned form of identification to people who are in this country illegally.
I appreciate your taking the time to send me your thoughts on this issue, and I encourage you to continue to send me your ideas in the months to come. Please continue to monitor my website for additional information about my policies. I look forward to hearing from you again.
Charlie
